Many people these days learn better through a keyboard and a computer than with pen and paper. To recognise this, the “ Metal Industry Guidelines for Safe Work” have been re-developed into e-learning modules. The content is the same but the learning is brought to life so is a more hands-on, interactive way to teach new workers or refresh more experienced ones.
The modules cover the general working environment, high-risk activities such as working at height and in confined spaces, lifting and moving, machine guarding and lock-out procedures, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic and refrigeration systems, machining, welding, fabrication and metal casting. There are also sections on emergency management, first aid and health and safety management. A big advantage of computer-based learning is the modules can be done at any time of the day, from anywhere – in a classroom or at home – and it can be done at the worker’s own pace.
To reinforce the learning, a set of Workplace Activity Sheets asks follow-up questions designed to relate the modules’ key messages directly to the student’s workplace. The activity sheets can also be used for specific workplace assessments. The Interactive Guidelines can be ordered by contacting metal@acc.co.nz
